to follow up... I've now tried to import those 2 normalised images into the BrainVisa database. The 'Import T1 MRI 1' brick actually "detects" two different input_spm_orientation for the 2 images: it gives Radio for Case 1 and Neuro for Case 2. I guess this is consistent with the behavior ...

my advice: don't code any IO routines yourself, you can find a good number of packages that will do all this for you with a good google search (maybe that was in the link yann gave you )

first step: you apparantely just need to instally python-qt3, and then, the binary distribution seems to work (at least the main brainvisa interface starts... I havn't tried to run anything yet)
